Step 1: Start with Quality Coffee Beans

The foundation of a perfect cup of coffee is the beans. You can’t expect great coffee if you’re using stale or low-quality beans. Here are a few tips for choosing the right beans:

Freshness: Always check the roast date on the bag and use a brand you trust. My favorite brand of coffee beans is Lifeboost Coffee, which I’ll discuss more in depth below.  I feel like I’ve tried every brand of beans under the sun both at local farmers markets and by scouring the internet.  Lots of trial and error to nail down my favorite brand.

Type of Bean: Arabica beans are known for their smooth and complex flavors, while Robusta beans tend to be more robust and bitter. Choose the type that suits your taste.

Origin: Beans from different regions have distinct flavor profiles. Experiment with beans from different places but always make sure they are responsibly grown.

Lifeboost Coffee is my favorite brand because of its bold, rich, and smooth base for lattes, macchiatos, and cappuccinos! The flavor of the beans is not diluted by the addition of milks and cream. It is also responsibly grown which is most important to me when selecting a coffee brand! Their beans are grown in the shaded rainforest mountains of Nicaragua slowly produce coffee cherries that are then finalized by high roasting temperatures bringing you pesticide-free, organic, low-acid supremely dark and bold espresso beans.  Their beans are hand-picked, spring water washed, and sun-dried. My favorite part about the company is that they have all of their beans 3rd party tested for mycotoxins, heavy metals, pesticides, and 400 other toxins!

Step 2: Grind Just Before Brewing

Grinding your beans just before brewing is crucial for preserving flavor. The Breville espresso machine has a built-in grinder, allowing you to adjust the grind size for your preferred extraction. A finer grind will give you a richer espresso, while a coarser grind may lead to a weaker shot. Experiment with grind sizes to find the perfect balance.  I love the sound of freshly ground beans in the morning.  It will forever be engrained in my mind.

Step 3: Dial in the espresso to get a perfect shot: find the right balance of grind size, tamp pressure, and extraction time. Here’s how…

Grind Size: A finer grind will increase extraction time, while a coarser grind will decrease it. Aim for an extraction time of 25-30 seconds. – Tamp Pressure: Tamp the coffee grounds with consistent pressure (about 30 pounds). This ensures an even extraction.

Extraction Time: The ideal shot should take about 25-30 seconds. If it’s too fast, adjust the grind finer; if it’s too slow, adjust coarser.

Step 4: Froth milk for lattes and cappuccinos

If you enjoy milk-based drinks like lattes or cappuccinos, the Breville espresso machine’s steam wand is a fantastic tool! Here’s how to froth milk:

Milk Temperature: Aim for 150-160°F (65-70°C). Use a thermometer if you’re unsure.

Milk Frothing Technique: Submerge the steam wand just below the surface of the milk, tilting the pitcher to create a whirlpool effect. Once you have the desired amount of froth, raise the wand slightly to continue heating the milk without adding more froth.

When in doubt, there are tons of YouTube Videos out there to help you perfect the use of the machine’s steam wand!  You’ll feel like a barista in no time.
