Dining Room Chairs- Affordable, Designer Looking Options

Dining room chairs can enhance the look of a dining room.  Not to mention, they are a necessity for enjoying a meal at the dining room table!  

As I mentioned on Instagram, I recently sold my dining room chairs at my local consignment store and am currently on the hunt for new ones.  The chairs we used to have were too dark for our already dark stained table and they made the whole room look drab and boring.  They were also extremely uncomfortable!  I could not bare to have another dinner in that room and make my guests sit on those hard-as-a rock chairs!  So, I’m looking for something more comfortable and neutral to brighten up the space and create contrast against our dark stained table.  I really would like to have something similar to the chairs we have in our kichen nook.  Below, I’ve listed my thought process and the steps I follow in order to select chairs for a certain room.

How to select the perfect dining room chairs….

• Measure Your Table Height
  • My husband built our table himself and he purposely made the table top slightly higher than an average dining room table.  I love that he did this because we don’t have to hunch over at all to eat, and our table is very comfortable for tall people! (most men in our family are very tall)  However,  I have to make sure and find chairs with a tall enough back so that they don’t look dwarfed next to the table.
• Measure Your Table Length
  • there is nothing worse than a table that has too many chairs crammed under it.  It is very important to measure the side length of your table and figure out how many chairs can fit comfortably in the space.  The key word is “comfortably”.
• Select Your Style
  • Ask yourself, “what kind of look am I going for”?  Do you like farmhouse, modern, traditional, boho, French, eclectic, etc.  Once you figure out your style, you can pretty much make any table work by selecting the correct chairs to go with it.
  • I like to focus my style ideas by browsing Pinterest and pinning dining rooms to a board that I am totally in love with!   To see my Pinterest board entitled “dining rooms” click here.
• Figure out what is most important to you
  • Is it comfort, is it color, is it material, is it price or is it a certain look?  Narrow this down, and your search will be 1000 times easier!

What to do with your old dining chairs…

• sell them to a local consignment store
• donate them to your local Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity and write them off on your taxes
• sell them on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or LetGo
• have a garage sale
• donate them to a church, school, or shelter in need of furniture
• give them to a newly married couple or family that is starting over in a new home
