The powder bathroom, also known as a small guest bath or half bath. Don’t treat your powder bathroom like an ordinary bathroom. Make your powder bathroom stand out b by giving it a bold look your guests will love.
Hello everyone! Today begins Week 1 of the One Room Challenge! I am most excited because this is my very first year to participate! I have no idea what to expect and could throw up just thinking about it honestly but also can’t wait to get started.
What Is the One Room Challenge?
The One Room Challenge is a design event that occurs every April and October. It’s hosted by Calling it Home and media partner, House Beautiful. The challenge is to transform a room in just six weeks.
Each week, Calling it Home shares twenty featured designers on Wednesday and guest participants (like me) will link up on Thursdays, right here. Be sure to sign up in the “subscribe” box under my profile picture to receive my updates automatically each week! I wouldn’t want you to miss one step of this transformation chaos over the next 5 weeks.
How I Picked to Makeover Our Powder Bathroom For The One Room Challenge…
Ok, so let’s get down to the details and my thought process on how I decided to makeover our powder bathroom for this challenge out of all the rooms in our house….
In deciding which room to makeover, it was a tough decision between our powder bathroom or our master bedroom, as I equally disdain both. I’ve shared on Instagram before that our powder bathroom, also commonly referred to as the “half bath” is a high traffic area in our home. Not only do guests use that bathroom while they are visiting, but we also use that bathroom all day everyday because of its convenient location near the kitchen.
I’ve painted this room twice and still have not been content with the color. I’ve also been in a constant battle with the decor on the walls since we moved in 8 years ago because certain people like to slam doors, creating an earthquake effect, breaking every single thing I’ve ever tried to hang. (Even with 3M stabilizing tape, yup, we’re kind of rough on stuff!)
Soooooo….. I thought, why not makeover this bathroom and do it right! Why not make it so I actually enjoy walking in there and seeing it every time I go in and out of the back door.
This Fall, I would love to makeover our master bedroom in the One Room Challenge for October!. I figured since this is my first ORC to participate in, I should start with a small space like our powder bathroom. Then maybe by the Fall I’ll be ready to tackle our bedroom!
The “Before”
Dark, boring, dark, and more boring!
I was stuck in a rut when trying to complete this room, all because of the walls. I wasn’t totally committed to the wall color (disclaimer, I love this paint color, it’s in my laundry room too, just not on these small bathroom walls) which created a domino effect of design paralysis. Not loving the wall color led to “Well, I don’t know what color to paint the cabinets”….which led to “Well, if I don’t know what color to paint the cabinets I can’t pick out hardware”….which led to, “If I can’t pick out hardware then I can’t find a light fixture”….and the dominos just continued to fall……
So now I have a plan to take care of this #firstworld problem once and for all…..
My Plan to Fix it Up:
- Wallpaper the top half of the wall with wallpaper from York Wallcoverings via Decorators Best
- Add wainscot to the lower half of the wall and paint it to match the trim
- Replace the light fixture with something from Lamps Plus
- Find a long runner rug
- Add trim to make the cabinets look more custom
- Paint the cabinets a pretty gray color to match the wallpaper
- Paint the mirror trim to match the cabinets
- Add new hardware to the cabinets to complement the light fixture
- Find pretty accessories to complement the light fixture and hardware
- Go on a vacation
Sound good?
